Arm Lymphedema Treatment

Many people have been afflicted with breast cancer. When they have removal of the cancerous nodes they are typically not warned that they may develop arm lymphedema. The cancer removal can have the lymph nodes removed to determine if the cancer has spread beyond that tissue. For breast cancer victims, the axillary area is where most of the lymph nodes are removed. This can lead to arm lymphedema, or a vast swelling of the arm.

There are some procedures which are less invasive than the removal of the lymph nodes but in some cases that isn't an option for women. In addition, radiation treatment can also damage the nodes and may also lead to arm lymphedema.

In many cases, the arm lymphedema does not develop immediately. It can take up to a year to develop and may come on with any small injury. The pain and the discomfort that arm lymphedema can cause is difficult to live with and most women are looking for a treatment that can assist them in removing the swelling.

In many cases, lymphedema specialists will assist you in finding ways to treat the lymphedema. The first type of treatment may be that you'll be asked to use a compression bandage that will assist you in losing some of the arm lymphedema. In some instances this kind of treatment can work and will help you to lose some of the swelling.

In other instances, the arm lymphedema does not always respond fully or respond well to the lymphedema bandage. For these people, quite often a lymphedema pump will be the treatment of choice. Lymphedema pumps can help to compress the tissue in wavelike sequences and assist those who are suffering from the severe swelling in their arm to reabsorb some of the fluid which is causing the swelling. Arm lymphedema treatments are usually going to consist of more than one type of treatment. In order to be able to live without the severe swelling and discomfort, you may beed a lymphedema pump as well as some kind of therapeutic dressings on your affected area.

Arm lymphedema treatments can consist of a special diet, of a lymphedema pump and perhaps even of other additions to your daily regimen. In order to keep the swelling down in your arm you may also be required to elevate your arm several times a day.

Lymphedema pumps can be slightly costly which is a concern of many people who require them. In some cases, your arm lymphedema treatments can be covered by your insurance while in others there are agencies such as the ACS, American Cancer society who will help you to cover treatments. Don't go without a treatment that could potentially help you when you can find the means to cover the costs for it by seeking financial help or financing.
