Chronic Lymphedema: Methods for Compensating for the Lymph System's Inabilities

Chronic Lymphedema is a condition whereby the lymph system is not able to adequately drain the fluid that is amassing in the body. It can take place when there are lymph tumors or when there are surgical interventions or for many other reasons. The inability of the body to drain the fluid can cause the affected limbs to become very fluid filled. In some cases they may even drain through the skin. Patients may see their limbs swell to two or three times the size of the normal limb and they may experience some very vast discomfort when this takes place.

Drainage of the lymph fluid is necessary or a means to cause the limb to be reduced to a more normal size. There are several methods which can be used to treat chronic lymphedema.

There is the use of manual drainage to help to impel the flow of lymph fluid. There are also some wonderful physical therapy methods which exist to help to promote better lymph flow. This manual massage can be very helpful in providing for better lymph fluid movement.

Lastly, there are lympedema pumps which are provided and promoted by physicians as well as by physical therapy professionals which are used to compress and to promote the flow of lymph fluid and to allow for its uptake.

These pumps are recommended by many physicians and have been very successfully used to provide for better management of the symptoms in the cases of chronic lymphedema. They are quite often costly, but in many cases, they can be covered under insurance. The makers of several types of lymphedema pumps are able and willing to assist you in determining how you can get a lymphedema pump to help you to lower the swelling in your extremities. Typically they can find ways to assist you in finding someone or some agency to help to pay the costs or at least part of the cost of the lymphedema pump.

Chronic lymphedema can be very uncomfortable and very debilitating. It can be one of the causative factors in decubitus ulcers as well as skin breakdown. Finding a way to ensure that your lymphedema is better managed is job number one in promoting skin integrity.Pumps can help to make that happen for you.

If you are post surgical or have any measure of lymphedema, chances are that a lymphedema pump can help you to manage it. Being without this valuable tool simply because you cannot afford it is no longer necessary. Controlling chronic lymphedema is possible by the use of multiple methods. Make sure that you review all of the methods available and are taking advantage of all of those methods. Speak with your doctor about what a lymphedema pump may be able to do for you.
